# Debt Management: Finding the Right Strategy for Your Family

For many of the families we work with, debt isn't a side issue — it's the biggest thing standing between where they are today and where they want to be. The good news is that debt management isn't a single tactic. It's a toolkit, and the right combination depends on your numbers, your temperament, and what you're trying to solve for.

At JK Asset Management, debt management is never treated as separate from the rest of your financial plan. It's built on top of your Monthly Budget, using the room we find in your cash flow to pay down debt faster — without putting the rest of your financial life on hold.

## Types of Debt Management

**Debt avalanche.** You make minimum payments on everything, then put every extra dollar toward the debt with the highest interest rate. Once that one is paid off, you roll the payment into the next-highest-rate debt, and so on.

**Debt snowball.** Same idea, but you target your smallest balance first instead of your highest rate. Once it's gone, you roll that payment into the next-smallest balance.

**Debt consolidation.** You combine multiple debts into a single new loan or line of credit, ideally at a lower interest rate — often a personal loan, a line of credit, or a balance-transfer credit card.

**Debt management plan (DMP).** You work with a credit counseling agency, which negotiates with your creditors (often for a lower interest rate or waived fees) and consolidates your payments into one monthly amount paid to the agency, which then pays your creditors.

**Debt settlement.** You (or a company you hire) negotiate with creditors to pay a lump sum that's less than the full balance owed, usually after falling behind on payments.

**Bankruptcy.** A legal process that either restructures your debt into a repayment plan or discharges certain debts entirely. This is a last-resort option with serious, long-lasting credit consequences, and it's only ever discussed once every other avenue has been considered.

## Pros and Cons at a Glance

| Method | How It Works | Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Debt avalanche** | Pay minimums on all debts; put extra money toward the highest-interest debt first | Minimizes total interest paid over time; mathematically the most efficient method | Progress can feel slow at first if your highest-rate debt also has a large balance, which can hurt motivation |
| **Debt snowball** | Pay minimums on all debts; put extra money toward the smallest balance first | Quick early wins build momentum and confidence; simple to understand and stick with | Usually costs more in total interest than the avalanche method |
| **Debt consolidation** | Combine multiple debts into one new loan or credit line at a (hopefully) lower rate | Simplifies multiple payments into one; can lower your interest rate and monthly payment | Requires decent credit to get a good rate; can carry fees; doesn't work if spending habits aren't addressed — old accounts can refill |
| **Debt management plan (DMP)** | A credit counseling agency negotiates with creditors and consolidates payments into one | Often reduces interest rates and fees; professional support and a structured payoff timeline; creditors may stop collection calls | Usually requires closing credit accounts; typically takes 3–5 years; may involve a monthly agency fee |
| **Debt settlement** | Negotiate to pay less than the full balance owed, usually in a lump sum | Can significantly reduce what you ultimately pay | Usually requires missing payments first, which damages credit; settled amounts can be taxed as income; no guarantee creditors will agree |
| **Bankruptcy** | Legal process to restructure or discharge debt through the courts | Can eliminate or restructure otherwise unmanageable debt; provides legal protection from creditors | Major, long-lasting damage to credit; can affect ability to rent, get credit, or in some cases employment; not all debts qualify |

## How We Help You Choose

There's no universally "best" method — the right one depends on the shape of your debt, your interest rates, and what will actually keep you motivated. As part of our process, once we've completed your EFA (Excellent Financial Analysis) and built your Monthly Budget, we look at your full debt picture together — what you owe, at what rates, and how much room your budget gives you — and match you to the strategy that fits your family, not a one-size-fits-all formula.
