# Care-First Is Arriving Early: What Alberta Drivers Will See on Renewal Notices from November 1

- October 5, 2026

![Care-First Is Arriving - Image 1](https://www.jkassetmanagement.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/Care-First%20Is%20Arriving%20-%20Image%201.jpg?width=1792&height=1008&name=Care-First%20Is%20Arriving%20-%20Image%201.jpg)

If you drive in Alberta, the change may arrive in your mailbox earlier than you expected. Care-First pricing begins appearing on Alberta auto insurance renewal notices from November 1, 2026. Because renewal notices are typically sent roughly six weeks before your actual renewal date, your next letter may reflect the new system before January 1, 2027-the date Care-First formally begins.

That timing matters.

Our earlier article, Alberta Auto Insurance in 2027: *What the Care-First System Could Mean for Your Budget*, focused on the January transition. The important update is that drivers may start seeing the financial impact on paper as early as November.

If your renewal falls in late 2026 or early 2027, do not automatically file the envelope away.

Read it carefully.

---

What Should You Look for on Your Renewal Notice?
Your renewal notice may look familiar at first. There will still be a premium, a renewal date, coverage details, and payment information.

But under the new system, several details deserve your attention.

1\. Did the quoted premium change?
Start with the number you will actually pay.

Compare the new premium with:
• Your current annual premium
• Your previous renewal notice
• Any monthly payment amount
• The effective date of the new policy

The change may be positive, negative, or minimal. The provincial average does not determine your individual result.

2\. How are medical and rehabilitation benefits described?
Care-First is designed to provide enhanced medical and rehabilitation benefits after an eligible collision. Alberta’s official information describes broader access to treatment and rehabilitation, including coverage that may continue as long as treatment provides a measurable benefit.

Your renewal documents may summarize these benefits differently from the government’s public explanations.

Look for the relevant section and note:
• What medical treatment is covered
• How rehabilitation benefits are described
• Whether limits or eligibility conditions are listed
• Who to contact after a collision
• Whether a separate guide or policy document is included

You do not need to memorize the fine print. You do need to know where the information is located.

3\. How is income support described?
Care-First also changes the way income replacement and income support are handled after certain collisions.

Read the section describing:
• Eligibility for income replacement
• How income is calculated
• Maximum benefit amounts
• How long support may continue
• What documentation may be required

If you are self-employed, work on contract, earn fluctuating income or have more than one source of income, this section may deserve extra attention.

4\. Has the Grid language disappeared?
The transition repeals Alberta’s Grid rating system. As the old Grid structure disappears, premiums are expected to reflect individual and insurer-specific risk more directly.

That means the factors used by different insurers may matter more to the price you are offered.

Look through your notice and policy documents for references to:
• Grid rating
• Basic coverage limits
• Rating classifications
• Driver and vehicle risk factors
• Insurer-specific pricing

If a term is unclear, ask your insurer or broker to explain it in plain language.

5\. What are your deductible and coverage limits?
Do not focus only on the premium.

Check whether your:
• Collision deductible
• Comprehensive deductible
• Liability limit
• Optional coverage
• Roadside assistance
• Replacement-cost coverage
• Accident benefits

are the same as before.

A lower premium may partly reflect a change in coverage. An unchanged premium may still hide a change in a deductible or limit.

Read the notice, not just the headline number.

The Honest Premium Picture: Average Savings Are Not Guaranteed
The Alberta Insurance Rate Board has projected that average premiums for private passenger vehicles could fall by approximately 13.7%, or about $297 per vehicle, under Care-First.

That is meaningful. It may provide breathing room for many households.

But $297 is an average, not a promise.

Some drivers may pay less. Some may pay more. Others may see little change.

Your result may depend on factors such as:
• Your driving record
• Your location
• Your vehicle
• Your age and experience
• Your current insurer
• Your coverage choices
• Your claims history
• How your insurer calculates risk

The impact may also vary significantly by vehicle class. Motorcycle premiums, for example, are expected to increase substantially because of enhanced injury benefits for that group.

Drivers who previously benefited from Grid-related limits or protections may also see increases as pricing changes.

So, if your current premium is $2,200, do not assume that your renewal will automatically fall by 13.7%. The average projection is useful context, but your own renewal notice is the number that belongs in your household budget.

Do not bank the savings until you see them.

Under the adjusted rate-cap structure, average premium increases at renewal are limited to 10%. That protection is designed to help moderate increases, but it does not mean every driver will receive the same outcome or that premiums cannot change for other reasons.

This is a provincial policy shift still being implemented. Individual results will vary.

Why Shopping Around Matters More Now
When a major rating system changes, comparing quotes becomes more than a routine exercise.

With the Grid repealed, insurer-specific pricing differences should matter more. Two insurers may assess the same driver, vehicle, and address differently under their own approved rating programs.

That makes it worthwhile to compare two or three quotes at renewal.

Here is a practical approach:

1\. Start about one month before renewal.
This gives you time to review the policy, ask questions, and compare options without rushing.

2\. Compare the same coverage.
A cheaper headline number may simply reflect lower liability limits, higher deductibles, or fewer
optional protections.

3\. Ask what changed between quotes.
Was the difference caused by the insurer’s pricing model, your vehicle, your driving record, your
deductible or your coverage?

4\. Ask about discounts carefully.
Confirm whether a discount is temporary, conditional, or tied to usage-based insurance.

5\. Review payment terms.
Compare the total annual cost, not only the monthly payment.

6\. Keep your existing policy active until the replacement is confirmed.
Avoid creating a gap in coverage while moving between insurers.
The goal is not always to choose the cheapest quote. The goal is to understand what you are paying
for and whether the coverage fits your needs.

Treat the Change as a Budget Line Item
A premium reduction is welcome. It may help with groceries, fuel, debt payments or savings.

But it is not necessarily a windfall.

If your premium falls by $25 per month, you might direct that amount toward:
• An emergency reserve
• A deductible fund
• A TFSA
• Debt repayment
• Retirement savings
• A child’s education fund

If your premium rises, try to treat it as a line item to review rather than an immediate crisis. Check whether the increase resulted from the system change, a vehicle change, a claim, a ticket, a coverage adjustment, or another factor.

And remember: an unchanged premium is not automatically a good deal. If the market and ratings system have changed, it may still be worth comparing your options.

The Bigger Protection Question Is Your Income
Auto insurance is often where families first pay attention to insurance. The renewal letter arrives, the
premium changes, and the household budget responds.

But the larger question is often this:

What protects your income if you cannot work?

Your vehicle may be important. Your income usually covers the vehicle, the mortgage, groceries, utilities, childcare, and everyday living expenses.

That is why an auto renewal can be a reasonable prompt to review your wider protection plan, including:
• Life insurance
• Disability insurance
• Accident and sickness coverage
• Emergency savings
• Workplace benefits
• Debt and mortgage obligations

This does not mean you need to purchase another product. It means you may benefit from understanding what protection you already have and where gaps might exist.

Nearly one-third of Canadians have no life insurance at all, and more than 60% worry about outliving their money. Those figures point to a broader concern: many households are trying to protect the future without always knowing whether their current plan is enough.

Start where you are.

November Transition Checklist
Use this short checklist when your renewal notice arrives:
• Check your renewal date.
• Read the notice instead of filing it away.
• Compare the new premium with your current premium.
• Review medical and rehabilitation benefit descriptions.
• Confirm how income support is explained.
• Look for changes to Grid-related language.
• Check deductibles and coverage limits.
• Get two or three comparable quotes.
• Ask what caused any difference between quotes.
• Keep an emergency reserve available for deductibles.
• Review your wider income and family protection needs.
• Use official information from Alberta.ca and the Alberta Insurance Rate Board.

The transition does not require panic. It requires attention.

Take a few minutes. Ask questions. Compare carefully.
