# RDSP and the Disability Tax Credit: What Alberta Families Should Review Before Year-End

- October 19, 2026

[Joseph Kapler](https://www.jkassetmanagement.ca/jk-asset-management-blog/author/joseph-kapler)

![RDSP and the DTC - Image 1](https://www.jkassetmanagement.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%201.jpg?width=1792&height=1008&name=RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%201.jpg)

Before December 31, 2026, take a few minutes to review your family’s Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), Disability Tax Credit (DTC) approval, tax filings and remaining government entitlements.

Two age-related deadlines deserve special attention:
• If the beneficiary turned 49 in 2026: December 31 is the final year in which new Canada Disability Savings Grants and Bonds may be paid.
• If the beneficiary turned 59 in 2026: December 31 is the final date for making contributions to the RDSP.

Those deadlines may not apply to your family. But if they do, they are important.

You do not need to make every decision today. You do need to understand what may be ending, what may still be available, and what information should be confirmed before the calendar turns.

What Is an RDSP, and Why Does Year-End Matter?
A Registered Disability Savings Plan is a long-term savings plan for a person who is approved for the Disability Tax Credit.

The plan may receive government support through:
• The Canada Disability Savings Grant
• The Canada Disability Savings Bond
• Carry-forward entitlements from eligible previous years

You do not need to memorize every rule before asking questions. In the simple version, an RDSP may help a DTC-approved beneficiary build long-term financial resources with government assistance, depending on age, family income, contributions and other eligibility requirements.

For 2026:
• The lifetime contribution limit is $200,000.
• There is no annual contribution limit.
• Contributions are permitted until December 31 of the year the beneficiary turns 59.
• Grants and bonds may be paid until December 31 of the year the beneficiary turns 49.
• The maximum annual grant is generally $3,500, with a $70,000 lifetime maximum.
• The maximum annual bond is generally $1,000, with a $20,000 lifetime maximum.
• Unused grant and bond entitlements may be carried forward for up to 10 years, subject to the program rules.

For 2026, grant and bond calculations use family income reported for 2024. That is why older tax returns can still affect what becomes available today.

The goal is not to rush. The goal is to avoid missing a review that could give your family more clarity.

---

Five Year-End Actions to Take Before December 31
1\. Confirm That the DTC Approval Is Current and on File
An RDSP generally requires the beneficiary to be approved for the Disability Tax Credit.

Start by confirming:
• The DTC approval has been received from the CRA.
• The approved period covers 2026, if applicable.
• The beneficiary’s DTC status is properly reflected in the RDSP records.
• Any required consent or grant-and-bond application has been completed with the plan issuer.

The CRA makes all DTC eligibility decisions. A financial advisor cannot approve the credit, guarantee approval, or replace the CRA’s process.

If your family is unsure whether an approval remains current, check the beneficiary’s CRA account or contact the CRA directly. You can also review the [CRA’s official Disability Tax Credit information](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/segments/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities/disability-tax-credit.html).

Recent federal reforms may also make it worthwhile for some families to ask new questions. The reforms expand the range of regulated professionals who may certify certain impairment areas, including physiotherapists,  occupational therapists and podiatrists within their professional scope. They also streamline applications for certain long-standing conditions.

The underlying DTC eligibility rules still matter. Streamlined does not mean automatic approval.

2\. Make Sure Required Tax Returns Have Been Filed
This step is easy to underestimate.

The government needs tax-return information to calculate adjusted family net income. Without filed
returns, it may not be able to determine the correct grant or bond entitlement.

In practical terms, missing tax returns may mean:
• Only the minimum matching grant is available.
• The higher 300% or 200% grant rates cannot be calculated.
• No Canada Disability Savings Bond is paid.

For 2026, the program uses 2024 family income. Beneficiaries generally need to file the required returns for the previous two years and continue filing in future years while the RDSP is open.

For a beneficiary under 18, parent or guardian income may be used. Beginning when the beneficiary turns 19, the calculation generally uses the beneficiary’s income and their spouse’s or common-law partner’s income, if applicable.

If a return has not been filed, that does not mean the situation is hopeless. It means the family should ask the CRA, a qualified tax professional, or the appropriate government office what needs to be filed and whether previous years can be updated.

No judgment. Just a practical next step.

3\. Ask the Plan Issuer for the Current Entitlement
Your RDSP issuer can provide information specific to the plan. Ask for a current statement showing:
• Available 2026 grant entitlement
• Available 2026 bond entitlement
• Unused carry-forward grant entitlement
• Unused carry-forward bond entitlement
• The contribution required to receive available grant amounts
• Any important deadlines for processing a contribution
• Current investment holdings and fees

Do not rely only on an old statement or a general online calculator. The amount available depends on the beneficiary’s DTC history, family income, age, contributions and previous government payments.

Carry-forward rules can be valuable, but they are not unlimited. Unused entitlements may generally be carried forward for up to 10 years, and older years may eventually fall outside the available window.

Ask for the actual numbers.

4\. Make Any Intended 2026 Contribution Before December 31
If you intend to contribute to capture a 2026 grant, speak with the plan issuer early enough to understand its processing requirements.

Under the lower-income matching schedule, a contribution of up to $1,500 may maximize the annual grant of up to $3,500:
• The first $500 may attract a 300% grant.
• The next $1,000 may attract a 200% grant.

Higher-income beneficiaries may have a different matching rate, with the annual grant potentially
reaching $1,000 on the first $1,000 contributed.

If carry-forward entitlements are available, a contribution may be matched against previous eligible
years according to government rules. The issuer can explain how a contribution may be allocated.

Do not contribute money to your household’s needs for rent, food, debt payments, or emergency expenses. An RDSP is designed for long-term planning. A contribution should fit your family’s actual cash flow, not create new financial stress.

If the beneficiary turned 49 on December 31, 2026, that is the final year for new grants and bonds. That is the sharper deadline.

5\. Review Investments, Fees and Withdrawal Rules
An RDSP is not simply a contribution account. The money is invested according to the options selected through the plan issuer.

Review:
• How the funds are invested
• Whether the investment approach fits the time horizon
• The fees being charged
• The level of risk
• Whether the beneficiary’s circumstances have changed
• The plan’s withdrawal rules and tax treatment

Withdrawals are taxed to the beneficiary, and government grants and bonds are included in income when withdrawn.

There is also an assistance holdback to understand. For withdrawals, up to **$3 of grants and bonds paid in the previous 10 years may need to be repaid for every $1 withdrawn**, subject to the applicable maximum.

That does not mean withdrawals are never appropriate. It means an RDSP should not usually be treated like a chequing account or a short-term emergency fund.

Before withdrawing, ask the plan issuer to explain the possible repayment and tax consequences in writing.

![RDSP and the DTC - Image 3](https://www.jkassetmanagement.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%203.jpg?width=750&height=750&name=RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%203.jpg)

---

What If Your Family Has Never Applied for the DTC?
Some families have never applied because the process felt confusing, expensive, or discouraging.

Others were told informally that the person probably would not qualify. Some could not find the right professional to assess the relevant impairment. Others were focused on daily caregiving and simply did not have the energy to begin.

The recent federal changes may be a reason to review the situation again.

Depending on the impairment and the professional’s scope, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists may have expanded roles in certifying certain areas. Certain long-standing conditions may also have a streamlined certification process.

There is no cost to asking the CRA or an appropriate regulated professional what may apply. A question is not a promise of approval.

You can bring your doubts.

---

Low Income Does Not Automatically Put an RDSP Out of Reach
Families with modest or low income sometimes assume an RDSP is only for people who can make large contributions.

That is not necessarily the case.

The Canada Disability Savings Bond does not require a personal contribution. For 2026, a beneficiary may receive up to $1,000 in bond based on family income, with a lifetime limit of $20,000. The exact amount depends on the applicable income thresholds and the government’s assessment.

For families eligible for the bond, filing tax returns is especially important. Without income information, the government may not be able to calculate or pay the bond.

![RDSP and the DTC - Image 4](https://www.jkassetmanagement.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%204.jpg?width=750&height=750&name=RDSP%20and%20the%20DTC%20-%20Image%204.jpg)

---

A Calm Warning About Withdrawals
Government grants and bonds can make an RDSP powerful, but they also come with conditions.

For each $1 withdrawn, up to $3 of grants and bonds paid in the preceding 10 years may need to be
repaid. The exact result depends on the plan, the timing and the current rules.

That is why the RDSP is generally a long-term plan, not a short-term savings account.

Before withdrawing, speak with the issuer and consider how the withdrawal may affect:
• Government assistance that must be repaid
• The beneficiary’s taxable income
• Future financial support
• Investment growth
• Other disability-related benefits

The right answer depends on the family’s needs. There is no one-size-fits-all decision.

Your Before-Year-End RDSP Checklist
Use this checklist before December 31, 2026:
• Confirm the beneficiary’s DTC approval and approved period.
• Confirm that the CRA has the required tax returns.
• Verify that 2024 income information is available for 2026 calculations.
• Ask the RDSP issuer for current grant and bond entitlement.
• Ask whether unused carry-forward entitlements remain.
• Confirm whether the beneficiary turned 49 or 59 in 2026.
• Decide whether a 2026 contribution fits your household budget.
• Allow enough time for the issuer to process the contribution.
• Review investments, risk level and plan fees.
• Ask about withdrawal rules and the assistance holdback.
• Keep copies of statements, forms and confirmations.
• Check official CRA and ESDC information before acting.
